The Fortuner is and has been one of Toyota’s bestselling models in India, not just for a few years but for more than a decade. In June last year, the Japanese automaker unveiled the refreshed Fortuner for the Thai market. And today, India has received it. For the mid-life update, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has introduced the Fortuner in two forms – the standard and the Legender. Here’s the price list:

As expected, there has been a noticeable price increase. But, in Toyota’s defence, there’s plenty of stuff to justify the numbers. In terms of looks, the refreshed Fortuner boasts reprofiled LED headlamps, a larger grille, restyled front and rear bumpers, new 18-inch alloy wheels and revised split tail lamps. The exterior styling of the Legender is a bit more sporty, with quad LED DRLs, a bunch of blacked-out elements, dual-tone alloy wheels and a different front bumper.

Indoors, the Fortuner facelift is pretty-much the same as before. But, it carries more goodies. The list includes an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, 8-way powered driver’s seat, seat ventilation for front occupants, an 11-speaker JBL sound system, ambient lighting and a 360-degree camera. As for the colour scheme, there are two options – black and chamois. The Legender, on the other hand, is available with just one exterior colour combination – white with black roof. Similarly, there’s only one interior theme on offer – black with maroon. Toyota has added the convenience of hands-free boot-lid opening in the Legender’s long list of features.

Powertrains? The 2.7-litre petrol engine has been carried over from the pre-facelift model with no changes. It pumps out 164bhp/245Nm and is available with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. It is the diesel engine that has received a significant change in output. The 2.8-litre mill now produces 201bhp/500Nm when mated to the 6-speed automatic transmission. Opt for the 6-speed manual, and the Fortuner makes do with 201bhp/420Nm. As before, the option of a four-wheel-drive is available with the diesel engine only.

The revised Fortuner range will continue to compete against the Ford Endeavour, MG Gloster and the Mahindra Alturas G4. If you aren’t looking for something too serious, you can consider the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. The German offering might not have the off-roading capability as the trio mentioned before. Still, it does put on a strong fight in terms of comfort, built quality and practicality.
