A few days ago, Skoda Auto India confirmed that it would showcase the Vision IN at the Auto Expo 2020. That, as we know, will eventually find a production form and become Volkswagen Group India’s first assault in the compact SUV space. Volkswagen will then take that same recipe, rebadge and redesign it, to introduce its version of a Seltos-rival. As it turns out, that too will be available in concept form at the event scheduled for next month. Volkswagen has codenamed it as the A0. The production-version, however, is likely to carry the T-Cross nameplate.

Like Skoda’s answer to the Hyundai Creta, the Volkswagen A0 will be heavily localised. Underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform, which is tailor-made for India, both SUVs will be noticeably bigger than their European counterparts (Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Cross). To begin with, both SUVs will get petrol engine options, and the choice of a factory-fitted CNG kit could come at a later stage. Skoda said that its version of the SUV, which remains unnamed for India, will enter production this year. Will Volkswagen do the same with the A0? Only time will tell.

The other three Volkswagen SUVs lined-up for India will arrive via the CBU route. One is the T-Roc. In international markets, that is a direct rival for the Skoda Karoq. For the record, the latter is coming to India as well. Volkswagen India’s head honcho, Steffen Knapp, confirms that the response for the Tiguan has been “tremendous”. Because of that, the Tiguan AllSpace is also part of the shortlist for India. The fourth model? In all probability, it will be the ID Crozz EV. The zero-emissions crossover will make an appearance at the Auto Expo 2020. For the European market, the EV will enter production later this year.

Volkswagen says that part of its India 2.0 project strategy includes SUV offensiveness. And by confirming the launch of four SUVs within two years, the plan shines through.
