Ever since Ferrari introduced the 458, it has been rolling out some of the best-looking cars ever created. Even the 488 GTB, which was the spiritual successor to the 458, was a thing of beauty. But that happened during the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS). Time for Ferrari to replace the 488 GTB? You bet! At this year’s GIMS, Ferrari will showcase the F8 Tributo and unsurprisingly, it is another looker from the mad Italians.

So, what’s powering this one? Just behind the seats is a 3.9-litre V8 engine which is boosted by two turbochargers. Yes, it is the same one that won the “Best Engine” title in the International Engine of the Year awards for three years in a row – from 2016 to 2018. In the F8 Tributo, the engine pumps out 720PS of power and 770Nm of torque. Ferrari fanatics will tell you that those figures match to those of the Pista.

Compared to 488 GTB, the Ferrari F8 Tributo has 50PS/10Nm more on tap. The sprints from nought to 100kmph and 200kmph are dealt with in 2.9 seconds and 7.8 seconds, respectively. While the former number is 0.1 seconds lesser than its predecessor, the latter is down by 0.5 seconds. Ferrari claims that the F8 Tributo can reach the same top speed as the Pista – 340kmph. That’s 10kmph more than the 488 GTB.

Apart from adding more power to the F8 Tributo’s package, Ferrari ensured that the whole car went on a weight-saving diet. At 1,330kg, it is 40kg lighter than the 488 GTB and that does make difference in a performance-oriented machine. What else? Oh yes, aerodynamics! In Ferrari world, the F8 Tributo has a 10 per cent aerodynamic efficiency over the 488 GTB. In our world, the new model cuts through the air with lesser drag.

The interiors are just as striking as the exteriors. Ferrari has introduced new round air vents and a new mother-of-multifunction steering wheel. The analogue tachometer is, in typical Ferrari fashion, flanked by two digital displays which can be configured to show different stuff including GPS navigation and an odometer. Look closely and you see a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in front of the passenger. There was just no room for the darn thing in the centre of the aggressively styled dashboard!

So, there you have it. The F8 Tributo is the latest addition to Ferrari’s long history of epic models. Expect the folks from Maranello to launch a convertible version of it in the near future. How good will that look?!

A car nutter by heart. A hopeless engineer by education. Gunning for one goal - simplify cars.
