Saar: It is expected to be completed within a period of three years and will cut the distance between the two metros from the current 1,450km to 1,250km.

The Union road transport and highways minister, Nitin Gadkari, has said that the construction of the expressway joining Delhi and Mumbai will begin in the month of December this year. The ambitious project was officially announced in April this year, with the plan to run a road parallel to the existing NH-8 highway. But due to the high land acquisition costs, the new expressway was shifted to run more eastwards.

Gadkari mentioned that by realigning the stretch of the new expressway, the government has saved over Rs 16,000 crore in land acquisitions. While an acre is coming in at Rs 7 crore according to the original alignment, the new route has brought it down to Rs 80 lakh a hectare. He said that the land alone will cost around Rs 6,000 crore.

The new expressway between the two metros is tipped to half the travel times for vehicles. Currently, cars and trucks spend around 24 hours and 44 hours respectively to travel between Mumbai and Delhi. With the new stretch of tarmac in place, which will also cut the distance between the two cities from the current 1,450km to 1,250km, cars and trucks will be able to complete their journeys within 12 hours and 22 hours respectively.

The proposal to build this new expressway was brought up to decongest Delhi-NCR area. All the heavy commercial vehicles, which currently pass through the outskirts of Delhi, will then ply past the already congested and highly polluted national capital. According to reports, about three lakh vehicles use NH-8 on a daily basis. To speed up the process of constructing the new stretch of road, Gadkari had earlier mentioned that work will start at 40 different locations simultaneously.
