Let’s clear the air on the headline. Back in October 2019, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Toyota Tsusho Group (Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) & Toyota Tsusho India Private Limited (TTIPL)) joined forces to conceive Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu India Private Limited (MSTI). The new company, a 50:50 joint venture between the aforementioned brands, is headquartered in New Delhi.

With those facts out of the way, let’s get back to the newest development. MSTI has inaugurated its first vehicle scrapping and recycling unit in India. The facility is located in NOIDA, a town that shares a border with the nation’s capital. The company says that the plant follows “globally recognised best practices to maximise scrap recovery” and that the whole operation is “scientific and environment friendly”. In short, it offers an organised and transparent dismantling of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV). The snapshot below sums up the end-to-end process.

The facility is extensive. It’s spread over 10,993 sq.m. and can scrap and recycle more than 24,000 ELVs every year. It has attracted an investment of more than Rs 44 crore, an amount that helped rope in modern machines. And to give “Atmanirbhar Bharat” a push, all the equipment in the facility is made in India. Also, the unit follows stringent solid and liquid waste management to ensure zero discharge of liquid and gases from the ELVs. MSTI says that it will set up more such plants in India, based on the demand.

To deliver a rounded experience, the facility offers vehicle pick up and end-to-end documentation work. Moreover, owners of ELVs will witness transparent pricing, while the payment will go directly to their bank accounts. And of course, since the vehicle scrapping and recycling unit is government-approved, it will issue a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ to the vehicle’s owner. As you must be aware, that is vital to avail extra discounts/benefits under India’s Vehicle Scrappage Policy.
