What you see here is no ordinary Mulsanne. Like there ever was! Bentley calls this one the Mulsanne 6.75 Edition. Only 30 examples will ever exist. Once it goes out of production, the Mulsanne moniker will bow out too. In other words, the Mulsanne 6.75 Edition is the limousine’s last hurrah. So, why such a unique nameplate? That comes courtesy of the engine that powers this Luxo barge.

Bentley fans would have started joining the dots. Yes, the limited edition Mulsanne is based on the existing Mulsanne Speed. The firepower comes from the iconic 6¾-litre V8, which is boosted by two turbochargers. The result is 530bhp and a mammoth 1,100Nm of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission harnesses the oomph and feeds it to the rear wheels. Performance figures? 0-100kmph is done and dusted in 4.9 seconds, and the top speed is 305kmph. Those numbers are super-impressive for a vehicle that weighs 15kg shy of 2.7 tonnes (kerb).

The reason why Bentley named the last Mulsanne as the 6.75 Edition is that the engine celebrates its 60th anniversary. (Fun fact: It is the longest-serving V8 in continuous production in the world.) To make this particular version standout, Mulliner has injected some bespoke design elements. For instance, miniature versions of the engine oil cap cover the ventilation controls indoors. The seats boast bespoke 6.75 Edition motifs, and the same logo gets projected by the LED Welcome Lamps. Mulliner has even changed the faces of the clock and minor gauges to feature schematic cutaway drawings of the engine itself.

On the outside, the headlamps and taillamps boast bright chrome wrapping, and the Flying B mascot on the bonnet gets a dark tint treatment. The Mulliner Serenity radiator grille and exhaust finishers are also part of the package. 21-inch, five-spoke alloys are from the Mulsanne Speed but feature bright-machined finish with gloss black pockets.

It is sad to see the Mulsanne go. It is probably the only worthwhile alternative to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Once the inevitable happens, the Flying Spur will inherit the flagship crown for Bentley. The said model, which is essentially a four-door Continental GT, will receive a hybrid powertrain by 2023.

A car nutter by heart. A hopeless engineer by education. Gunning for one goal - simplify cars.
