We’ve got another pure-electric Audi. It’s called the e-tron GT. Before you wonder, GT stands for Gran Turismo. In simple English, it’s a high-performance car.  The four-door EV has landed in two variants – Quattro and RS. Their prices, in the same order, are Rs 1.80 crore and Rs 2.05 crore. Audi started accepting bookings for the car from September 8, 2021, with the minimum token amount pegged at Rs 10 lakh.

Powering both e-tron GT variants are two electric motors, one at each axle. In Quattro form, they jointly put out up to 523bhp/640Nm. However, in RS spec, the car gets a punchier rear motor, taking the maximum oomph up to 637bhp/830Nm. Because of the extra power, the RS e-tron GT can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 3.3 seconds, 0.8 seconds quicker than the e-tron GT Quattro. Top speed? The Quattro can manage 245kmph, whereas the RS can clock 250kmph.

Both derivatives have the same battery – a 93.4kWh pack, out of which 83.7kWh is usable. Audi says that where the e-tron GT Quattro can travel up to 488km on a single charge, the RS e-tron GT will run out of juice in 472km. Those range numbers are according to WLTP. As you’d expect with such an expensive piece of kit, the EV support both AC and DC charging. The battery can charge from 5 to 80 per cent in under 22.5 minutes using a recommended fast charger (270kW). Or look at it this way – a five-minute charge from the same feed can add 100km to the range. And, those who’ll plug the car into an 11kW AC charger will have to leave it so overnight.

On the features front, the Audi e-tron GT has a ton of them. The list includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, ambient lighting and heated ORVMs with memory function. The kit also comprises an auto-dimming IRVM, a panoramic glass roof, wireless mobile charger and three-zone automatic climate control.

Like the e-tron SUV and Sportback, the e-tron GT comes to India as a direct import. That explains those mahusive price tags. That said, the newcomer has become the first performance-oriented EV in India. And many who can afford to buy it will do so based on that fact alone.

A car nutter by heart. A hopeless engineer by education. Gunning for one goal - simplify cars.
