After a long wait, Volkswagen has finally joined the compact SUV bandwagon with the introduction of Taigun. Prices start at Rs 10.50 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 17.50 lakh. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the Taigun is a vital product for VW as it fits in a segment with cut-throat competition. Moreover, it will set the tone for future VWs with heavy localisation. The Taigun is a petrol-only model. That said, buyers do have multiple options when it comes to choosing the powertrain. There are two engine and transmission options each. The range starts with the 1.0-litre TSI motor that pumps out 113bhp/178Nm. If you want more oomph, there’s the 1.5-litre TSI mill with 148bhp/250Nm on tap. Both powerplants come coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Those looking for a two-pedal arrangement can have the smaller engine with a 6-speed torque converter and the larger one with a 7-speed DSG.

Volkswagen has equipped the Taigun with a range of features. The list includes an electric sunroof, LED-powered headlamps, taillamps and DRLs, ventilated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels and cruise control. However, if all that is a bit poor for you, the Taigun has more to offer. Creature comforts like an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice command recognition and wireless mobile charger are also available. Providing the safety blanket are features like electronic stability control, six airbags, hill hold control, tyre pressure deflation warning, a rear-view camera and auto-dimming IRVM.

There are five colour options available, all monotone. They are Curcuma Yellow, Wild Cherry Red, Candy White, Reflex Silver and Carbon Steel Grey.

Volkswagen says it has already received 12,221 bookings for the Taigun. Impressive! The SUV has a lot in its package to compete with the best of them. The list of rivals includes the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and the step-sibling – the Skoda Kushaq. Soon, the segment will gain a new player – MG Astor. So, the question is – would you buy the Taigun over others? Or, perhaps, wait for the Astor to hit the market?
