If you are the sort of person who definitely wants an Audi Coupé, or Cabriolet, or Sportback but only with an odd number in the nameplate, your choice is really down to three models – A3, A5, and A7. Further scrutiny about your preferences could reveal that the A3 is a tad too small and the A7 is out of budget. Or, you might be just a normal person and wants something good looking, doesn’t blow a hole in your bank balance and has some sporting credentials. No matter which bucket you fall into, Audi has some good news!

Meet the Audi A5 facelift! Changes are more than just skin deep. But let’s just start from the skin itself. The refreshed model gets a new front grille which brings it in line with the rest of the new-gen Audi models with the latest design language. The front and rear bumpers too have received tweaks in design and there’s a diffuser at the back. Flanking it are two trapezoidal exhaust outlets which look nice. The S models and the A5 Cabriolet get their own unique design cues. A total of 12 shades of paints are available, include a new metallic one – district green.

All A5 models will get LED headlamps as standard. The Matrix LED headlamps and LED taillamps with dynamic turn signals are optional upgrades. However, the range-topping version will get both those optional extras as standard along with dynamic light sequencing. If you don’t know what that is, just think of the lights doing a little dance.

Inside, the 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system has received more processing power and a new operating system. Apart from that, the driver gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot. In some markets, the Audi A5 range can also be configured to feature connect plus package. That comprises of a number of online services including online traffic sign and hazard information, on-street parking and the Car-to-X service traffic light information.

Time to get under the bonnet. At the time of launch, the refreshed A5 range will be available in four engines and all with mild-hybrid tech. Also standard across the range will be an automatic transmission and, depending on the variant, it will have 7 or 8 speeds. Mid-range versions will get the option of Quattro all-wheel-drive, whereas the range-topping variants will have that as standard. Audi says that all A5 models will be set up to be sporty and comfortable. For those who want to trade the latter for the former can either pay extra for a sport suspension or for one with controlled damping.

Power figures for Europe will start at 161hp and go all the way up to 342hp/700Nm with the S5 TDI. The latter comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine which will be offered with both the Sportback and Coupé. Thanks to those power figures, the S models can hit 100kmph from nothing in less than 5 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph. For markets outside Europe, the S models will get a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 349hp/500Nm. With that engine, Audi claims a 0-100kmph time of 4.7 seconds.

For those who want the wind in their hair, cabriolets of both A5 and S5 variants will also be available. As before, they will have a fabric roof which can be opened fully in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 50kmph. Bodies of both the soft-top versions have been reinforced for more rigidity. Audi claims a boot space of 370 litres with the roof in place.

Audi will start accepting orders for the refreshed A5 range from fall 2019 in Europe. Models will reach dealers early next year. It remains to be seen whether Audi introduces these versions in India as well.
