Saar: While both will jointly develop a telematics control unit, the homegrown automaker will supply BS VI-compliant, low-displacement petrol engines to its American counterpart in India.

If you have been following the Mahindra-Ford partnership, you would know that in March this year the duo signed five MoU (Memoranda of Understanding). Out of the lot, one was regarding Mahindra supplying powertrain options to Ford and another was based on co-developing connected car solutions. Well, the automakers have now come out with some details of the aforementioned areas of collaboration.

Mahindra will develop and supply a low-displacement petrol engine to Ford India for use in its existing and future models. This marriage, however, will only come into effect from 2020. The said petrol engine will be BS VI-compliant, as it needs to be because BS-VI norms will come into effect across India from April 2020. The new engine will help Ford India to diversify its product portfolio as it already has dragon-series of low-displacement petrol engines.

Over to the top of co-developing a suite of connected car solutions. Both Ford and Mahindra will put their brains behind the development of a telematics control unit, which will be used across both Mahindra and Ford vehicles. For the uninitiated, the duo will develop something similar to Suzuki Connect, NissanConnect and Volkswagen Connect.

The other areas where Mahindra and Ford will join forces include the development of two SUVs (one mid-size and one compact), one electric vehicle and helping each other in their pursuit of global presence. Ford, as we know, is present in a lot more countries outside India as compared to Mahindra. All in all, this alliance will be fruitful for both Mahindra and Ford.

It must be noted that all MoU are non-binding in nature. Expect the duo to shed some light on where they stand on the other areas of collaboration.
