BMW has this habit – it changes product portfolios without uttering a single word. The alterations usually include subtractions or additions of variants. Until February 2020, BMW was selling the X5 in three derivatives. One of them, the xDrive30d Sport costing Rs 73.3 lakh, suddenly disappeared from the following month. That was the least expensive of the lot.

Now, however, BMW has brought it back in a slightly tweaked form. Called the X5 xDrive30d SportX, it wears a price tag of Rs 74.9 lakh. As you’d expect, there’s no mechanical difference to report. Under the bonnet is the same 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that pumps out 261bhp/620Nm. An 8-speed automatic handles transmission duties, while the oomph goes to all four wheels. BMW claims that the sprint from nothing to 100kmph takes 6.5 seconds, and the top speed is 230kmph.

There are a couple of differences in the features department. For instance, the SportX gets four-zone climate control, whereas the Sport offered 2.5-zone. That, along with a few other changes, is enough to justify the price difference.

Now, the X7. Up until last month, the behemoth was available in three variants – two with the xDrive30d badge and one with xDrive40i. It seems those weren’t enough for BMW fans as they needed a bit more kick along with a more loutish look. No problem said the German carmaker and meet the X7 M50d. Wearing a price tag of Rs 1.63 crore, it costs over Rs 56 lakh more than the next-in-line variant.

Part of the price difference is down to the fact that the M50d arrives as a CBU (Completely Built Unit), while all other X7 specimens available in India are CKD (Completely Knocked Down) units. The rest comes from the fact that it has more power and a lot more kit. The 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel generates 394bhp/760Nm, while an 8-speed automatic and an all-wheel-drive system harness and feed the oomph to the wheels. The sprint to 100kmph from a standstill takes 5.4 seconds, and it can reach 250kmph at full stretch.

As far as the list of features is concerned, the X7 M50d has an impressive one. The most serious stuff includes some M-specific elements such as the differential, sports seats, an aerodynamics package, multifunction leather steering wheel and bespoke 21-inch alloy wheels. Other features like 4-zone climate control, two 12.3-inch displays (one each for infotainment purposes and the instrument cluster), BMW’s LaserLight technology, a powered tailgate and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system are part of the package.

So, there you have it. The BMW X5 continues to rivals the likes of the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. The X7, on the other hand, locks horns with the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Lexus LX570 and the Range Rover.
