I bet you’ve been expecting this! Well, the wait is over as the Safari has finally received the #Dark Edition treatment. Tata’s flagship is the fourth model to get it, after the Harrier, Nexon and Altroz. There are four variants available – XT+, XTA+, XZ+ and XZA+. In the same order, their prices are Rs 19.06 lakh, Rs 20.36 lakh, Rs 21.115 lakh and Rs 22.415 lakh. You can also get the Safari #Dark Edition in a six-seater form – XZ+ (Rs 21.215 lakh) and XZA+ (Rs 22.515 lakh).

Time for some number-crunching. Compared to the standard XT+ and XTA+ variants, the #Dark Edition derivatives cost Rs 20,000 more. However, the price difference is much wider between the XZ+/XZA+ variants and their #Dark Editions. Rs 46,600, to be exact. That said, the Safari Gold Edition still retains the top-of-the-range title.

To create the #Dark Edition of the Safari, Tata Motors has garnished the three-row SUV with a Blackstone matrix dashboard, a new Oberon Black exterior paint, 18-inch Blackstone alloy wheels, #Dark branding and a Blackstone interior theme. And, the list of features includes ventilated seats in the first and second rows, a built-in air purifier, seats with deep blue stitching, Benecke Kaliko upholstery and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features, such as auto headlamps and wipers, automatic climate control, push-button start, tyre pressure monitoring system and cruise control, are also part of the package.

Like the rest of the Safari range, the #Dark Edition derivatives come with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. That puts out 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. By default, the powerplant comes coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Alternatively, one could have a 6-speed torque converter in the mix.

The Safari starts just shy of Rs 15 lakh and goes north of Rs 23 lakh for the fully-loaded version. In India, it competes with models such as the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector, Mahindra XUV700 and the upcoming Kia Carens.
