Volkswagen is back! Not with a bang but with utmost silence. After bestowing the Indian audience with cosmetically enhanced versions of the ageing Polo and Vento, the company has now done something with the Ameo quietly. What? It has launched a GT Line variant of its sub-4 metre sedan with an asking price of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom India). What that means is that new variant costs exactly the same as the Highline Plus diesel-DSG variant, on which it is based.

As we saw with its siblings, the Ameo GT gets black ORVMs, decals on the side, a couple of GT Line badges and a blacked-out roof. Apart from that, the only cosmetic addition is a boot-mounted spoiler which is also finished in black. So, a spoiler on a front-wheel-drive car. Aargh! For some, however, it is a sweet slap-on! Unlike the recently refreshed Polo and Vento, the Ameo GT doesn’t get new front and rear bumpers.

No points for guessing, there are no additional features on offer with the GT Line. So, everything from 16-inch alloy wheels, a cooled glovebox, chrome accents on the interior and footwell lamps, to electrically foldable ORVMs, one-touch operation for all four power windows, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, a rear-view camera and rain-sensing wipers, are part of the standard kit.

Mechanically too, the new entrant doesn’t bring anything new. Woah! Did that rhyme?! The 1.5-litre, turbo-diesel mill is good for 108hp/250Nm, while transmission duties are handled by the brilliant 7-speed automatic unit. The setup, in fact, is so good that with a claimed mileage of 21.73kmpl, it is slightly more frugal the diesel-MT combination.

If you don’t want the flashy Sunset Red paint job, you can have the Ameo GT in equally-flashy Lapiz Blue. Don’t like that either? Then you can add a dash of boredom with the car finished in Candy White, Carbon Steel or Reflex Silver. Apart from a 3-year paint warranty, the Ameo GT is also covered under Volkswagen’s 4Ever Care programme. For the uninitiated, that brings a standard warranty of 4 years/1,00,000km, three free services and a 4-year roadside assistance membership.

In India, the Volkswagen Ameo competes with a range of models, including the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ford Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and the Honda Amaze. Coming back to the original question – do you fancy this Volkswagen Ameo GT?
