Saar: The company managed to capture a 5 per cent share in India in 2017.

Volvo Auto India is on a mission to land a punch in the premium car space currently dominated by the Germans. And knowing that the company doesn’t assemble most of its products in India and brings them as direct imports at competitive prices further reinstates that fact. As of now, Volvo Auto India locally assembles only the S90 sedan and the XC90 SUV at its facility in close proximity of Bengaluru.

After capturing a 5 per cent market share in 2017, Volvo Auto India wants to reach double digits by 2020. Yes. The company wants to get hold of a 10 per cent market share in the Indian premium car scene. For that, the Indian arm of the Swedish carmaker will open one dealer per month for the next six months. After those have been inaugurated, the count of authorised dealerships across the country will reach 28.

Volvo XC60 And S90 Will Soon Get XC90’s T8 Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain In India

Additionally, Volvo Auto India is betting big on its upcoming product, the XC40. Scheduled to launch on July 4, 2018, it will complete Volvo’s SUV portfolio in India. The Volvo XC40 will take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1, Mini Countryman, Range Rover Evoque and the Audi Q3. With that segment in mind and what the India-bound XC40 has to offer, Volvo will certainly give nightmares to the established lot of compact premium SUVs in India.

In April this year, Volvo Auto India’s head honcho, Charles Frump, said that the company wants to assemble hybrid cars in India but is currently busy convincing the governing bodies on why hybrids will make the switch from conventional cars featuring an internal combustion engine to pure electrics, a much smoother transition.

Volvo Wants 50 Per Cent Sales From Pure EVs By 2025

We know that from 2019 Volvo will produce at least one electrified variant of each of its model. Diesel engines will be phased out slowly but steadily. In fact, the brand new Volvo S60 will become the first car from the Swedish carmaker that will not be offered with a diesel engine. All other models will meet the same fate sooner or later.
