It was back in January 2020 when India received its third all-electric SUV – the Nexon EV. It arrived with an introductory price list, which started at Rs 13.99 lakh. We’re in October, and the starting price tag is still the same. However, the remaining two variants – XZ+ and XZ+ Lux – now cost more. Both have received an upward bump by Rs 26,000. That means the Nexon EV in XZ+ trim has a price tag of Rs 15.25 lakh, and Rs 16.25 lakh in XZ+ Lux spec.

In all likelihood, the upward price revisions are connected to the rise in input costs and the depreciating currency. That said, Tata Motors has this habit of changing price tags frequently. Don’t get too surprised if, say in a few weeks, Nexon EV’s price list looks different again.

The Nexon EV packs a front-mounted electric motor that produces 127bhp/245Nm and a single-speed transmission. Juices come from a 30.2 kWh battery which, along with the electric motor, has a standard warranty of 8 years/1,60,000km. That for the rest of the car is 3 years/1,25,000km. Tata Motors claims that the Nexon EV can hit 100kmph from standstill in 9.9 seconds and, if driven responsibly, can travel up to 312km on a single charge.

For charging, one can plug the Nexon EV to a 15amp plug point (AC feed) or use a fast charger (DC feed). In the former case, the zero-emissions vehicle will take about 8 hours and 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 90 per cent. If there’s a recommended fast charger available, the Nexon EV can juice-up from zero to 80 per cent in approximately 1 hour.

In terms of features, the sub-compact SUV offers stuff like an electric sunroof, automatic headlamps and wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto-folding ORVMs, cooled glovebox and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The car also comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system mated to an 8-speaker sound system, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control and 35 connected-car features via the ZConnect mobile app.

The Nexon EV has a monopoly as it doesn’t have a direct rival in India at the moment. As a result, its production count had surpassed the 1,000-mark in August 2020.
