And the process has begun! Toyota has officially started accepting bookings for the BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) Innova Crysta. After the Glanza, which was always a BS6-ready vehicle, and the Yaris, which recently received a price hike because of the upgraded powertrain, the MPV becomes the third product that Toyota has upgraded to meet the stricter emission norms.

In the BSIV era, Innova Crysta was available with three engine options – 2.7-litre petrol; a 2.4-litre diesel; and a 2.8-litre diesel. The petrol and the smaller diesel engine will exist in the BS6 reign. However, the larger diesel mill will not. You can understand why Toyota has taken this harsh step – the BS6 version of that engine would have made the Innova Crysta way too expensive. And that, as it seems, wouldn’t have made a good business case. No matter how you look at it, the axing of the diesel motor is a big deal.

As for the other engines, their power and torque figures are likely to remain the same as before. The petrol mill produces 164bhp/245Nm, whereas the 2.4-litre diesel pumps out 148bhp/343Nm. Depending on the variant, both engines are available with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Like the power and torque figures, Toyota has yet to reveal the BS6 mileage numbers. Based on the trend we’ve seen, the fuel economy will be slightly lower than before. In India, the Innova brings home bread-and-butter for Toyota. Apart from that, the Fortuner continues to impress in its segment. Thanks to Toyota’s agreement with Suzuki, the Glanza has brought some life in former’s mainstream product portfolio too. Ever since the rebadged Baleno received a price list in June last year, Toyota has sold nearly 18,000 units of it. The duo will share more cross-badged products in times to come.
