For the past seven years, PSA Groupe has had two main platforms for its products – CMP and EMP2. In addition to serving as a base for conventionally-powered vehicles, both also helped in rolling out MHEVs (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles). EMP2 served the C and D segments, whereas CMP catered the B and C segment of cars. PSA could use the latter for producing pure-electric vehicles too.

However, technology in the EV world is continuously evolving. And with people looking for zero-emission mobility solutions in all shapes and sizes, it only makes sense to roll up the sleeves and meet that demand. To do just that, PSA Group has developed a new platform which, unlike the other two mentioned above, has an EV DNA. The French automobile group calls it eVMP – Electric Vehicle Modular Platform.

PSA Group has highlighted many aspects which will pay dividends in the coming years. First, it will be capable of housing a juice box ranging between 60 and 100 kWh for EVs. Although that doesn’t sound groundbreaking, this surely does – the platform will allow for storing 50 kWh per metre within the wheelbase. As per PSA, that’s an industry benchmark for EVs. Courtesy of that feat, vehicles based on the eVMP platform will provide a WLTP range between 400km and 650km. That figure will vary with the body style. What’s more, PSA will utilise the new-gen platform to produce hybrid vehicles as well. The new platform will underpin everything from sedans to SUVs falling in the C and D segments of the market.

Under PSA’s umbrella, you have Peugeot, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel and Vauxhall. In the coming future, all those brands will embrace the push for zero-emissions mobility on a larger scale. The new platform will help in achieving that as well. And, of course, once PSA and FCA complete the merger activities and officially give birth to Stellantis (name of the new automotive group), the portfolio of pure-electric automobiles will widen substantially.
