Saar: It looks like a more mainstream, ultra-luxury answer to the Bentley Bentayga and the super-expensive iterations of the Range Rover.

The 2018 Beijing Motor Show, which will open its gates on April 25, will become home for automakers to reveal their new offerings. One amongst those will be extra special. Why? Because it will carry the Mercedes-Maybach badge. The Germans haven’t shared any relevant information about this car apart from releasing a teaser video. Before we try and ramble on more about what it could be, here’s the video:

Before we get to the guessing game, let’s clear something out first. If it is an SUV, which we think it is, it won’t be the first one to wear that luxury badge on its backside. Remember the Mercedes-Benz G650 Maybach Landaulet? Although the production of that was restricted to just 99 units, it became the first SUV worthy enough to flaunt a Maybach logo. The one heading to China will be, in all probability, a lot more mainstream than just 99 units.

It is quite possible that the next-gen GLS is what Mercedes-Benz will land in people’s republic. But that Maybach logo in the video also gives us hope that the GLS has finally been tarted-up enough to become a Maybach. Rumours of the Maybach-badged GLS have been roaming around for years. This time around though we could, fingers crossed, actually see it in flesh. As far as the production version of the Maybach GLS is concerned, it is expected to break cover in November this year at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

No points for guessing, it will be landing a punch in the world of Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and the soon-to-be-conceived Aston Martin Lagonda SUV. Mercedes-Maybach, it seems, has really got the timing right. Not because the super-rich have lack of options, but because it will take some glamour away from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which is also due for unveiling later this year.
