Are you the sort of family man or woman who has a lot of members to lug around at times? Up until now, the only options you had in the luxury space were mammoth SUVs which, let’s face it, don’t offer the same level of comfort that an MPV delivers for 7 to 8 people under the same roof. Well, Mercedes-Benz has clearly thought of the exact same thing and that’s why it has decided to bring the V-Class MPV to India. It is slated to launch on January 24, 2019.

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class has been in existence since 2014. But since it has been designed to cater to a very specific segment, which wasn’t that big in India back then, it never came to our shores. Now though, the three-pointed star from Stuttgart feels the time is right and the V-Class will continue its product offensive strategy in India.

In international markets, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is sold in three different configurations – standard, long and extra-long. The overall length of the MPV, in the same order, is rated at 4,895mm, 5,140mm and 5,370mm. While the width and height remain identical, it’s the boot space that differentiates the trio. Mercedes-Benz India is tipped to land the V-Class in the latter two configurations.

Under the hood, the V-Class is likely to house the same engine that debuted in India with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift and was also carried over to the E-Class All-Terrain. It is a BS VI-compliant 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 194PS of power and 400Nm of torque. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

With such a large people carrier, there ought to be a large number of creature comforts. So, everything from a panoramic glass sunroof, automatic headlamps and wipers, split tailgate, ECO start/stop function to ambient lighting, a 5.5-inch colour display in the instrument cluster, three-zone climate control, heated front seats and a 7.0inch multimedia display will be part of the package. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class might also be offered with an 8-seat layout as standard and a 7-seat layout as an optional extra.

Mercedes-Benz India will be bringing the V-Class to India via the CBU route. Hence, pricing should start around Rs 80 lakh. Depending on how it catches on in India, the company will not hesitate to even consider assembling the big MPV locally.
