Saar: Only 106 specimens of the petrol-electric hybrid “Hyper-GT” will ever be made and all have already been reserved at 1.6 million GBP plus taxes, each.

In November 2016, McLaren announced that it is working on a hypercar. It even revealed some striking sketches to showcase what to expect from the three-seater hyper-machine. Back then and until yesterday, it was codenamed as BP23. Now though, McLaren has confirmed that it will be called as Speedtail. If you think that name resembles something that you’ve already heard before, then you are correct. In May last year, Rolls-Royce wowed the world with a one-off Sweptail, which was revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Anyway, let’s roll back to the McLaren Speedtail. The three-seat layout is reminiscent to the legendary McLaren F1. Just as that had a limited production of just 106 units, the McLaren Speedtail will have the same. That said, all 106 have already been reserved at 1.6 million GBP plus taxes, each. But unlike the speed king from the ‘90s, which had a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW, the Speedtail will be a petrol-electric hybrid. That’s more like the McLaren P1. Another astonishing bit is that all 106 units were allotted to their respective customers even before the car’s production was officially announced.

As you can see from the sketches, the McLaren Speedtail will better the F1’s top-speed record by 5kmph. Where the F1 maxed-out at 386kmph, the Speedtail will manage 391kmph. The newest entrant to McLaren’s Ultimate Series line-up is due to enter production at the end of next year. Each of the 106 customers will have the flexibility to customise their hybrid “Hyper-GT” to their taste with the help of McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

At the Geneva Motor Show, Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive, announced that a public reveal of the McLaren Speedtail can be expected by the end of this year. However, the company will rightfully give the preference to customers who have reserved the 106 units.
