Saar: It becomes the quickest and most powerful Sports Series model that Mclaren has ever produced.

At the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, a new Sports Series McLaren product made its world debut. Dubbed as the McLaren 600LT, it becomes the lightest, most powerful and quickest road-legal model in the Sports Series portfolio. The British carmaker also claims that it is the most track-focused of them all, including the McLaren Senna.

First up, the power plant. The McLaren 600LT is powered by a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo, V8 engine that puts out 600PS of power and 620Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission that routes the power to the road via the rear wheels only. McLaren claims that the 600LT can hit 100kmph and 200kmph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds and 8.2 seconds respectively and reach a top speed of 328kmph.

In terms of design, the McLaren 600LT takes inspiration from the 675LT model. The design elements which define LT, which stands for ‘Longtail’, are all over the 600LT. Compared to its closest sibling, the 570S Coupé, its elongated silhouette (by 74mm) comprises of an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and a fixed rear wing. All those aerodynamic design cues, coupled with a flat carbon fibre floor, help the McLaren 600LT produce 100kg of downforce at 250kmph.

The newest addition to the Sports Series catalogue has a dry weight of 1,247kg, which churns out a power-to-weight ratio of 481PS per tonne. If you go for the optional super-lightweight carbon fibre racing seats, which were originally developed for the McLaren Senna and cost 4,990 GBP, the 600LT weighs an astonishing 100kg less than the 570S Coupé. If that’s not enough, the company will also offer the MSO Clubsport or MSO Clubsport Pro packages with the McLaren 600LT. While the former adds 24,170 GBP to the price of the car, the latter costs an additional 28,480 GBP.

What do you get for your money? Choose the MSO Clubsport pack and McLaren will the above-mentioned racing seats, carbon fibre interior trim, titanium wheel nuts, carbon fibre roof and fender louvres made out of carbon fibre sporting a glossy finish. The more expensive package brings in MSO defined harness bar and 6-point harness for track use, in either black, blue, red or McLaren orange.

To improve aerodynamics, in conjunction with the LT trickery, the McLaren 600LT rides 8mm lower than the other models in the Sports Series portfolio, while the front track has increased by 10mm. The 600LT borrows the stiffer suspension components from the McLaren 720S. The forged aluminium double wishbones and uprights help in delivering the required track-focused performance and shave off 10.2kg in weight.

In the pursuit of weight saving, McLaren has installed lightweight aluminium callipers and stiffer carbon ceramic discs to the braking system of the 600LT. The result is a weight saving of 4kg. The braking system when working with the brake booster tech, which was developed for the McLaren Senna, helps the 600LT to come to a halt from 200kmph in just 117 metres. That’s just 1 metre more than what the McLaren P1 could manage. Even the newly designed alloy wheels are the lightest ones ever fitted to a Sports Series car.

McLaren has even put the cockpit on diet to shave as much weight as possible. Thanks to no carpets and the use of lightweight Alcantara upholstery, the company claims a weight saving of 5.7kg. No too hardcore for you? Get this. There’s no glovebox, AC, satellite navigation, music system and the door pockets have been replaced by nets. The standard-fit carbon fibre seats save an additional 21kg.

The McLaren 600LT will enter production in October this year and will only last for 12 months. That makes its availability limited. It is available to order now in its home country, with a starting price of 185,500 GBP. At current exchange rates, that is roughly Rs 1.69 crores.
