At the ongoing Auto Expo 2020, Tata Motors introduced the updated Harrier range. Bookings commenced officially a few days ago, with a minimum token amount of Rs 30,000. The main talking points include the SUV’s BS6-compliant (Bharat Stage 6) powertrains, the addition of an automatic transmission and a factory-fitted sunroof. Courtesy of these upgrades, the prices have shot up as well. The Harrier range now starts at Rs 13.69 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 20.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Here’s how the detailed price list looks like:

Compared to the BSIV (Bharat Stage IV) prices, the BS6 diesel-MT variants cost between Rs 25,000-30,000 more. Powering all manual and automatic Harrier derivatives is the same FCA-sourced, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine as before. However in BS6 guise, the power-plant pumps out 168bhp/350Nm. That shows an increment of approximately 30bhp. And the new 6-speed automatic transmission comes from Hyundai.

Apart from those additions, the updated Harrier also gets a new, range-topping trim level – XZ+. It ropes in features such as a factory-fitted sunroof (was earlier an optional extra), 6-way electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, auto-dimming IRVM and new 17-inch, dual-tone alloy wheels. Tata Motors has taken away the silver and copper paint shades and renamed the Thermisto Gold as Sparkle Cocoa. However, there’s a new Calypso Red colour option now available. The company has also designed the ORVMs to improve visibility. On the safety front, all variants of the Harrier come with ESP, a feature which only came with the range-topper earlier.

In the updated avatar, the Harrier becomes a more worthwhile competitor to the likes of the MG Hector and the Jeep Compass. If you still want to hold on for a three-row Harrier, Tata Motors will introduce the Gravitas within the first half of this year. The Hector, which is yet to receive a BS6-compliant diesel range, will also get a three-row derivative in the form of the Hector Plus.
