Until last week, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) had four hatchback offerings under Rs 10 lakh. Now, sadly, the count has shrunken down to three. The Grand i10 has been taken down from the official website. That means the carmaker won’t manufacture it anymore. Having said that, if you still fancy purchasing one, chances are you’ll find some stock with dealers. Don’t settle by checking with just one dealer. Since Hyundai usually has multiple dealerships within a city, contact as many as possible to increase your chances.

Before bowing out of service, the Grand i10 was available in petrol guise only. It came with the 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated engine (82bhp/114Nm) that still does duty in the Aura, Grand i10 Nios and even the Venue. And, the only transmission option on offer was the 5-speed manual. Even the choice of trim levels ended at two – Sportz and Magna. The Grand i10’s demise doesn’t come as a surprise. It looked and felt dated compared to the Nios and cannibalised the superior model in terms of price. The Xcent’s axing last year also fuelled speculation that the Grand i10’s days are numbered. The Hyundai Aura took over the responsibilities.

With the Grand i10 gone, the Grand i10 Nios takes over the responsibility to fight Hyundai’s case in a hotly contested segment. Unlike the axed model, the Nios is available in diesel, CNG and turbo-petrol avatars as well. Diesel-fed variants come with a 1.2-litre motor that produces 74bhp/190Nm, whereas the turbocharged petrol derivatives house a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder mill with 99bhp/172Nm. Both engines come coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. However, the diesel is also available with a 5-speed AMT.

In India, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios will continue to compete against the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo. Out of the lot, only the Hyundai is available with a turbocharged petrol engine. That said, the petrol-powered Figo isn’t far behind in terms of oomph.
