Expanding the vehicle service campaign to replace the faulty Takata airbag inflators for the driver and the front passenger, Honda Cars India has recalled 5,088 more cars. The count includes old-gen derivatives of the City, Jazz, Civic, Accord and the CR-V. In April this year, Honda India initiated the recall campaign for replacing the malfunctioning airbag inflators with the Accord sedan. A total of 3,669 units, built between 2003 and 2006, were part of that campaign.

Out of the 5,088 cars, a total of 2,577 units of the CR-V, manufactured between 2003-2008 and also in 2011, cover the majority chunk. Next in line are 2,099 units of the City, produced between 2007 and 2013. A total of 350 units of the Accord (2003) are also part of the total figure. Rounding up are 52 units of the Civic (2006-2008) and 10 units of the Jazz (2009-2012).

For the uninitiated, the recall for Takata airbag inflators is part of Honda’s global campaign. In fact, the same problem has been reported by other carmakers as well. The Japanese carmaker says that it is extremely important to get the faulty kit replaced as the airbags may deploy with excessive internal pressure when activated. In such an event, the airbag inflator casing might rupture which, in turn, may result in injury or safety risk to the vehicle occupants.

Needless to say, the entire process of replacement will be carried out at no cost to the customer. Honda dealers have commenced entertaining customers for this recall from today and they have also started reaching out to owners of affected vehicles. Customers can check whether their vehicle is part of this recall by entering the 17-character alpha-numeric VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on Honda’s official website. Alternatively, they can also get in touch with their nearest authorised dealership.
