Continuing with the expansion of the 8 Series portfolio, BMW has taken the wraps off two more M8 iterations – the Gran Coupé and the Competition Gran Coupé. BMW fanatics will tell you that these two are blends of the 8 Series Gran Coupé and the M8 Coupés that debuted earlier this year. If you do not understand what all of that means then this should help – the newly unveiled variants are four-door versions of the M8.

Compared to their two-door counterparts, the four-door models have an extra 200mm of the wheelbase, are 231mm longer and weigh 95kg more. With the added length, both M8 Gran Coupés offer more room for the rear passengers. With two doors dedicated to them, their ingress and egress become more convenient too. However, one might imagine that the added bulk would translate into slower acceleration times or an inferior top speed. Well, that’s partially true. The 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 produces 591hp in the Gran Coupé and 617hp in the Competition Gran Coupé. For both, the torque figure of 750Nm remains identical. The combination of an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system handles the job of harnessing all that oomph and feeding to the wheels.

As you would expect, those numbers and mechanical features are precisely the same as the two-door M8 Coupés. If you were to compare the 0-100kmph acceleration times and the electronically-limited top speed figures, with or without the optional M Driver’s Package, they are the same as well. Then, you might wonder, where is the performance deficiency? Well, that pops-up when you rope in the 0-200kmph acceleration times. Both M8 Gran Coupés take 0.4 seconds longer complete the sprint. Hence, to achieve the claimed top speed, they will have to work harder for longer too.

Predictably, there’s almost no change in the list of features on offer in the four-door formats. There are a bunch of M-badged inserts inside as well as outside the cabin, and the standard kit includes a BMW Display Key, wireless mobile charging, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights and BMW Live Cockpit Professional. For early birds, BMW also has lined-up just 400 units of M8 Gran Coupé First Edition. At this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, both M8 Gran Coupés will make their world premiere. The first set of markets will get them in April 2020.
