Saar: If yes, where will it fit in?

BMW M760Li

Another M-derived BMW? Seriously? And an M7? I mean, really? This development has been brought to light by the folks over at Bimmerfest. According to their research, the German carmaker has applied to trademark the “M7” name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It was approved for use by the department on April 27, 2018. That said, further approvals are pending for it to be used on automobiles specifically.

All that is great but where will the BMW M7 fit in? Logic dictates that the M7 badge will be reserved for the M5 or M3 equivalent of the 7 Series. But BMW already offers the M760Li M Performance, which is no slouch. In India, its 6.6-litre, turbocharged V12 petrol puts out 610PS of power and 800Nm of torque. That and the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission catapults the 5.2-metre long limousine to 100kmph from a standstill in just 3.7 seconds. All-wheel-drive comes as standard and so does a mileage figure which rarely graduates to double figures.

If a pure-blood BMW M7 is on the way, it could very well house an upgraded version of the 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 from the M5. Speaking of which, the M5 already has 600PS/750Nm on tap and we’ve already seen the leaked information about the BMW M5 Competition Package. With that supposedly delivering 625PS/800Nm, the M7’s V8 could very well touch the 650PS mark. Fair enough. But, here rises another question. BMW revealed the M8 Gran Coupe during the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. Won’t the M7 overlap to what the M8 would deliver in a prettier, sportier body?

BMW M8 Gran Coupe

We suppose it could and BMW wouldn’t mind. Why? Why not?! Selling the same car in different body styles is a genius that BMW and many other carmakers have championed over the years. And of course, the same powertrain from the M7 and the M8 Gran Coupe will find a place in the BMW X7 M, whenever BMW decides to conceive it. What a masterstroke it will be!
