Saar: Audi has already announced pricing for the USA and Germany. The e-Tron is also expected to make its way into India sometime late next year.

After releasing a plethora of teasers for the e-Tron, Audi has finally taken the wraps off its first-ever pure electric vehicle (EV). With the global unveiling, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker also announced the pricing for the USA and the German market. In the former, the Audi e-Tron starts at USD 74,800 and goes all the way up to USD 86,700. The most expensive variant is called the Edition One and its production will be limited to just 999 units in the USA. In Germany, the prices for the Audi e-Tron start at EUR 79,900.

The Audi e-Tron was originally scheduled to break cover at the Audi Summit on August 30, 2018, in Belgium. But that event was scrapped as Audi found itself entangled in the diesel emissions fiasco. And because the world premiere was pushed forward by over two weeks, Audi couldn’t let the interest surrounding the e-Tron fade away. To ensure that, the German carmaker released almost all the details about the car. We’ve already seen the high-tech cockpit and the optional virtual exterior mirrors. Audi also released all the specifications of the e-Tron last month.

If you can’t be bothered to click on any of the embedded links in the story, allow us to run you through a crash course for the Audi e-Tron. Deep within its belly is a 95kWh battery pack, which operates with a nominal voltage of 396V. The battery can be charged with an input of up to 150kW. At the maximum rate of charging, the on-board battery pack can get 80 per cent of its juices back in about 30 minutes. For charging at home, a standard 9.6kW AC charger is provided. Do the math and it will take nearly 10 hours to charge the battery pack from zero to 100 per cent. On a full charge, Audi claims that the e-Tron can travel over 400kmph and the clever recuperation system can further extend it.

The battery pack powers two electric motors, one each for the front and rear axles. In essence, the dual motors give the Audi e-Tron a Quattro four-wheel-drive system. Put together, the total power output is rated at 360PS/561Nm. There’s also a boost mode available which, when activated, boosts the power up to 408PS/664Nm. But, that mode is only available for a total of eight seconds. The EV can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 5.5 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 200kmph.

As far as features are concerned, the Audi e-Tron gets the Virtual Cockpit with two touchscreen displays. The one on the top, which measures 10.1 inches, manages driver controls including charging, navigation, telephone and infotainment. The one on the bottom, which stretches 8.6 inches diagonally, displays and controls comfort and HVAC features. There’s also a voice recognition system. On the safety front, the EV comes with features like a bunch of cameras which deliver a 360-degree view of the car, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic assist, park steering assist and intersection assist.

In case you are curious, the Audi e-Tron undercuts the Tesla Model X in terms of pricing. However, the list of competitors also includes the Jaguar I-Pace and the Mercedes-Benz EQC, which made its world premiere earlier this month. That happened a couple of days after Audi officially announced that the e-Tron has entered production. The first set of customers in Europe can expect deliveries of their e-Trons by the end of 2018. The Europeans will get it before the Americans as Audi is building its first-ever EV in Brussels, Belgium. As far as the electric motors that power the e-Tron are concerned, they are manufactured over 1,200km away in Hungary. Expect Audi India to land the e-Tron on our shores by the end of next year.
