Kia’s long-awaited entry into the incredibly busy subcompact SUV space finally comes through. The Sonet has arrived. It becomes the third offering from the South Korean carmaker and, by far, the most important. Prices start at Rs 6.71 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 11.99 lakh. And, between those two figures are thirteen others. In other words, the Kia Sonet is available in fifteen variants. Here, take a look at the detailed price list:

If you know what engine you want with the Sonet, then, probably, you’ll have an easier time to pick one out of that list. In essence, the latest entrant in the sub-4 metre space is available with three engine options. The 1.2-litre petrol, which produces 82bhp/115Nm, is available only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Then there’s the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol, which generates 118bhp/172Nm, comes mated to either a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or a 7-speed DCT. Diesel lovers can opt for the 1.5-litre motor which, if taken with a 6-speed manual, puts out 99bhp/240Nm. With the diesel-automatic combo, the Sonet has 113bhp/250Nm on tap. That’s what the Seltos gets from the same powertrain.

Spoilt for choices! Well, that’s not the only area where the Sonet delivers more than enough. Even the list of features is extensive, to say the least. There’s no point going over them one-by-one, but here are some which do set the tone right. The Sonet comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system with UVO Connect (connected-car tech), multiple drive modes, front parking sensors, up to six airbags, ventilated front seats, a digital instrument cluster and a 7-speaker Bose sound system. It also packs a wireless mobile charger, an electric sunroof, air purifier with virus protection, auto headlamps and automatic climate control.

Colours? Well, you can have the Sonet in one of the eight monotone shades. If opting for the HTX+ or GTX+ variants, the choice expands with three dual-tone finishes. Kia’s offering a three year/unlimited km warranty with the Sonet.

Rivals? Start counting! You have the step-sibling – the Hyundai Venue – leading the pack. Apart from that, there’s the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Honda WR-V, Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra XUV300. Later this month, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will join the party and, if Mahindra doesn’t kill it off, the BS6-compliant TUV300 will do the same in the near future. That’s not all as both Nissan (Magnite) and Renault (Kiger) are readying their products to enter the same segment. Come to think of it, even the Bolero and the all-new Thar are sub-4 metre SUVs. Argh! So much choice!
