Soon after India commenced the slow process of stepping out of the strict lockdown, Mercedes-Benz swung into action and launched two AMG models – the C 63 Coupe and the GT R. Today; it has launched another one – the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe. Priced at Rs 1.2 crore, it becomes the first model in India to flaunt the ‘AMG 53’ tag.

As you’d agree, that name itself is a mouthful and a half. But, it offers performance which more than justifies the effort one puts in naming it. Propulsion comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a 9-speed AMG-spec automatic transmission and an active all-wheel-drive system. The internal combustion engine alone pumps out 429bhp/520Nm, whereas the mild-hybrid system provides extra oomph of up to 21bhp/250Nm. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100kmph sprint time of 5.3 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph.

Just like all other AMG models, the GLE 53 Coupe isn’t just about raw power. It also packs features which allow the driver to relish driving. Leading the pack is the AMG Dynamic Select drive modes, which include Sport, Sport+ and Slippery. Also part of the package is the AMG Active Ride Control sports suspension, which is based on Air Body Control air suspension.

Mercedes-Benz has stuffed the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe with loads of creature comforts. The list includes Multibeam LED headlamps with adaptive high beam assist, a powered tailgate, electrically-adjustable steering wheel with memory function, panoramic electric sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, 64-colour ambient lighting and powered seats with memory function. The go-fast crossover also comes with a head-up display, keyless go, wireless mobile charging and two 12.3-inch displays, one each for the instrument cluster and infotainment purposes.

On the safety front, it packs tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors with 360-degree camera, blind spot assist, traffic sign assist, electric parking brake and ESP with acceleration skid control.

In India, the Coupe-shaped GLE competes with the Audi Q8 and the BMW X6. Out of the three, which one would you pick?
