Saar: Available only in the R-Design trim, it is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 190PS/400Nm.

The wait has finally met its fate. The Volvo XC40 is here and it comes in just one trim, R-Design, and one price – Rs 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom India). This is an introductory price and will eventually rise as the demand goes up. Volvo Auto India started accepting bookings for its smallest SUV in May this year with a minimum booking amount of Rs 5 lakh. Volvo Cars assigned 200 units of XC40 to India in the first lot. And when we say the first lot, we mean the first import lot. Yes. The Volvo XC40 will be imported to India as a completely built unit for the time being.

Powering it is the same engine-transmission setup that does duty in the Volvo S90 D4. It is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel mill that puts out 190PS of power and 400Nm of torque. Transmission duties are handled by an 8-speed automatic unit which feeds power to all four wheels. Volvo claims that with this engine-transmission combination and all-wheel-drive in the mix, the XC40 can complete the 0-100kmph sprint in 7.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 210kmph.

In terms of features, the R-Design tag gives a major hint. In short, the Volvo XC40 comes loaded with goodies. The list includes a 9.0-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, wireless mobile phone charging, digital instrument cluster, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic sunroof. Being a Volvo product, the XC40 scores high on the safety front too. As standard, you get run-off  road mitigation, adaptive cruise control, park pilot assist and lane-keeping assist among others.

Pure Electric Volvo XC40 In The Making

The Volvo XC40 goes up against formidable rivals from other European carmakers. The list includes the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, Mini Countryman and the Range Rover Evoque.  Out of the lot, which one would you put your hard-earned money on? Do let us know in the comments below.
