Saar: Apart from releasing the second black-and-white image, Elon Musk also confirmed that it will be revealed in March 2019.

Teaser No. 2

At this year’s shareholders meeting, Tesla’s head honcho, Elon Musk, released the second official teaser image for the Model Y. The first image was released in June last year and the second image, as you can see, is just as black and white. Additionally, Musk mentioned that the Tesla Model Y will be revealed in March next year and enter production in early 2020.

Like the first teaser image (shown below), there isn’t much that can be taken away from the second image either. But there is one peculiar detail that has caught our eye and both teaser images share it. Any guesses? Well, there are no outer rear view mirrors (ORVMs). Does this mean that the Tesla Model Y will become the first model in the company’s portfolio that will ditch the conventional ORVMs in favour of a camera-screen combination on either side? It certainly looks like it but there aren’t any bulges, not even minute ones, that can be spotted. That said, it is possible that the cameras are mounted in such a manner that they don’t disrupt the aerodynamics of the car. Of course, for them being there at the first place was partially to decrease the drag coefficient.

Teaser No. 1

Other than that, all we can say is that the Tesla Model Y is in a very grey area right now! That’s what happens when a teaser gets stuck between the white and black shades. As far as production is concerned, Musk said that the Model Y will, in all probability, be produced in a new plant. That’s because its factory in Fremont, California is running at capacity, producing Model S, Model X and the Model 3. The least expensive product, the Model 3, had faced issues with production in the recent past. But now, as Musk confirmed, 3,500 units of it are rolling off the factory floor every week, which is expected to go up to 5,000 units by the end of June 2018.

Which new plant will it be built at, is something Musk did not clear. But we do know that Tesla is planning to set up a factory in China and one in Europe as well. But building the Model Y outside the USA only cannot be a viable option. The new plant is also likely to produce the Tesla Semi Truck and the second-gen Tesla Roadster. While the former is expected to deliver a range of over 800km and cost around 150,000 USD (just over Rs 1 crore as per today’s currency exchange rates), the latter will be offered with a “SpaceX” package. “SpaceX”? A couple of rockets that spread out in “James Bond” style? No one knows as Musk didn’t shed any further light on what it would offer.
