Tata Motors currently has two electric vehicles (EV) in its portfolio – Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan. Although neither is currently available on sale to the general public, it was the latter of the two that helped Tata Motors win the first tender from EESL of 10,000 EVs last year. As per that tender, the EV had to have a minimum range of 130km, top speed of at least 80kmph and fast charging support.

Now though, according to a report by ET Auto, Tata Motors has begun work on a dedicated platform for passenger electric vehicles. Additionally, the homegrown automaker will be working to develop a long-range EV powertrain with 320-volt of juice onboard, which will be capable to deliver a range between 300-400km on a single charge. Additionally, the new powertrain will have more power, better efficiency and will support fast charging. As per the report, the company wants to cash in on the immediate demand for electric vehicles with long-range powertrains.

The dedicated platform for EVs will not be the only new one coming from Tata Motors. The 45X Concept hatchback and the H5X Concept SUV, which broke cover during the 2018 Auto Expo, were underpinned by the newly developed ALFA and OMEGA platforms respectively. Both these platforms are flexible enough to accommodate electrified powertrains.

A week ago, Tata Motors handed over five Tigor EVs, which were part of the EESL tender, to the government of Maharashtra. That day it also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the same state government to launch 1,000 EVs across its range of commercial and passenger vehicles. Yesterday, Tata Motors delivered two Tigor EVs to the government of Madhya Pradesh. No points for guessing, the EVs delivered were also part of the aforementioned tender.
