If you’re familiar with Tata Motors’ nomenclature methodology for passenger vehicles, then you must have figured this one out. If not, don’t worry because that means you’re not a real car bore! Jokes aside, Tata Motors has introduced a new manual variant of the Harrier, and it wears the XT+ tag. For now, the company has priced it at Rs 16.99 lakh. But that along with the rest of the price list will receive an upward revision from October 1, 2020.

The new variant sits between the manual XT and XZ derivatives. In terms of price, the Harrier XT+ costs Rs 59,000 more than in XT form, but Rs 66,000 less than in XZ spec. So, what would you get for the extra amount if you opt for the new variant over the XT? Just one gizmo – a panoramic sunroof. Apart from that, there’s no difference between the two variants. That means features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker sound system, a rear-view camera, auto headlamps and wipers, automatic climate control and cruise control are part of the package.

Propulsion comes from the same 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine, which comes from FCA. It puts out 168bhp/350Nm, while a 6-speed manual handles transmission duties. As of now, the XT+ trim doesn’t come with a diesel-AT combination.

Those who can’t be bothered about a sunroof should stretch a bit and opt for the XZ trim instead. It comes with a lot more gadgets, including a 9-speaker JBL sound system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six airbags, Terrain Response Modes (Normal, Rough, Wet), front fog lamps with cornering function, hill descent control and 60:40 split rear seat.

In India, the Tata Harrier competes directly with the MG Hector and the Jeep Compass. It also falls in the same price bracket as the mid- and top-tier versions of smaller SUVs – Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks.
