Saar: Available with petrol and diesel engines, the new trim comes with a host cosmetic changes as well as some additional creature comforts.

Skoda Auto India has introduced a new trim for its entry-level product – the Rapid. Dubbed as the Skoda Rapid Onyx, its prices start at Rs 9.75 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 12.73 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom India). The new trim gets a host of cosmetic changes along with some additional creature comforts. But before we get to those, let’s take a look at the price list:

Skoda Rapid Onyx Prices (Ex-Showroom India)

VariantManual TransmissionAutomatic Transmission
1.6 MPI (Petrol)Rs 9.75 LakhRs 10.99 Lakh
1.5 TDI CR (Diesel)Rs 11.58 LakhRs 12.73 Lakh

So, what’s special about the Rapid Onyx? On the outside, it comes with 16-inch Clubber alloy wheels, black front grille with chrome surround and ORVM caps, B-pillars, body side moulding and boot lip garnish finished in glossy black. The cabin of the Rapid Onyx comes with contrasting dual-tone Ebony-Sand interiors, featuring premium perforated beige with wood design leatherette upholstery.

Other cosmetic tweaks include a flat-bottom steering wheel and scuff plates with Onyx branding. On the equipment front, the Rapid Onyx gets projector headlamps with black inserts, LED DRLs, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring support and a rear sunshade. Skoda will offer the Rapid Onyx in only two exterior paints – Candy White and an all-new shade called Lapiz Blue.

As you’d expect, there are no mechanical changes to highlight. If you want a petrol-fed Rapid Onyx, you will get a 1.6-litre engine under the hood. It is good for 105PS/153Nm and can be had with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed DSG. The diesel engine, on the other hand, has a cubic capacity of 1.5-litres and it has 110PS/250Nm on tap. This engine is also available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG. Skoda claims that the mileage figures for the petrol-manual, petrol-automatic, diesel-manual and diesel-automatic are 15.41kmpl, 14.84kmpl, 21.13kmpl and 21.72kmpl respectively.

The new trim should enhance the Rapid’s charm. Skoda’s sedan competes with the likes of the Toyota Yaris, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and its close cousin – the Volkswagen Vento.
