The Monte Carlo nameplate suffixing the Skoda Rapid first popped up in the year 2017. Back then, the Czech carmaker got itself entangled in a legal battle with a clothing brand which goes by the same name. A few months later, Skoda had to give in and rebadged the Monte Carlo as the Edition X. Now, however, Skoda has settled the legalities with the Indian apparels brand and has reintroduced the Rapid Monte Carlo in India.

The Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo is priced between Rs 11.16 lakh and Rs 14.26 lakh (ex-showroom India). It is available in a total of four engine-transmission combinations and all are from the standard car. In other words, there are no mechanical changes to report. For those who want a petrol engine under the bonnet will have to settle for the 1.6-litre mill that puts out 105PS/153Nm. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, if it’s the diesel engine you are after, you will get a 1.5-litre motor that produces 110PS/250Nm. That engine can be coupled with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG.

All that is pretty standard. What makes the Rapid Monte Carlo stand out is the bunch of cosmetic changes inside and out. First of all, the only colour available for the body is red. That gives a good platform for some contrasting finishes including the blacked-out grille, ORVMs, faux diffuser, B-pillar and spoiler. The projector headlamps feature chrome accents and the tyres are wrapped around new dual-tone 16-inch alloys. While there’s also a Monte Carlo badge on the B-pillar, the roof has also been blacked-out.

Inside the cabin, the Skoda Rapid Monte Carlo differentiates itself from the rest of the range with Piano black inserts on AC vents and trim centre, stainless steel foot pedals, a multifunction flat-bottomed steering wheel and red stitching highlights on the steering wheel and the gear knob. Don’t frown already as there’s more. The car also features Monte Carlo design scuff plates, leatherette seat covers and cushion pillows. Apart from all that, the kit includes cooled glovebox, automatic wipers, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a rear parking camera.

So, there you have it. You can finally buy a Rapid with a Monte Carlo badge. In India, the Skoda Rapid competes with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and its step-sibling – the Volkswagen Vento.
