Up until now, the smallest engine that you could have under the bonnet of Range Rover Sport in India was a 3.0-litre unit. Now, however, it is available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. The smaller engine is available in three trim levels of the Range Rover Sport – S, SE and HSE – and prices start at Rs 86.71 lakh (ex-showroom India). Thanks to the new engine option, the Range Rover Sport gets, for the first time, a seven-digit price tag.

Let’s unravel the engine first. It is lifted from the Land Rover Discovery, along with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The power-plant is good for 300PS of power and 400Nm of torque. Land Rover claims that the setup is enough for the Range Rover Sport to hit 100kmph from a standstill in 7.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 201kmph.

Here’s what Rohit Suri, who is the president and MD at Jaguar Land Rover India Ltd., said about the newly introduced powertrain option in an official statement:

The success of the Range Rover Sport has been integral in driving demand for the Land Rover portfolio in India. The Model Year 2019 2.0 L petrol derivative should further increase the aspirational value of the flagship model at an attractive and exciting price.

In the S trim, the Range Rover Sport comes with features like 19-inch alloy wheels, ambient lighting, two-zone climate control, 8-way adjustable front seats, 250-Watt sound system, cruise control, front and rear parking aids, Touch Pro Duo and Navigation Pro. The SE trim adds features like a fixed panoramic glass roof, heated and electrically operated ORVMs with memory function, 20-inch alloy wheels, 14-way adjustable front seats, three- a rear-view camera.

The most loaded amongst the three trims – HSE – makes the list of creature comforts lengthier with gizmos like electrically adjustable steering column, 825-Watt Meridian Sound System, Matrix LED headlights with signature DRLs and 16-way adjustable front seats with memory function. Needless to say, there are a bunch of optional extras available with each trim level.

Thanks to a lower price range, the Range Rover Sport can now compete with the likes of the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90. If you had the money, which one would you pick of out the lot?
