Always fancied a Porsche 718 but with bigger boots? Well, your prayers have been answered! The German sportscar maker has expanded the range with the introduction of two new variants – the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4. The former, which offers open-top fun, costs Rs 1.6 crore, whereas the latter, which is the entry-level and road-legal GT model, wears a price tag of Rs 1.63 crore.

Both variants claim the same title – the most powerful models in the 718 range. That’s because behind their seats lives a 4.0-litre, six-cylinder, naturally-aspirated engine which pumps out 414bhp/420Nm. And joy! The powerplant comes coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. Porsche claims that both can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 4.4 seconds. While the GT4 can reach 304kmph, the convertible nature of the Spyder keeps that figure at 301kmph.

Obviously, both new entrants feature more than just brute force. The Cayman GT4 offers up to 50 per cent more downforce. Looks aside, the rear-mounted spoiler also contributes to more grip on the move. As for the 718 Spyder, the rear wing rises at 120kmph automatically. The model is also the first in the Boxster family to produce aerodynamic downforce over the rear axle. That comes courtesy of a functional diffuser.

Aiding to the stable, grippy driving experience are a bunch of mechanicals and gizmos. Both go-fast 718s benefit from the same chassis. Also shared between the two are Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear differential lock. And, for that extra layer of security, one can go with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake by paying some extra money.

The Indian arm of Porsche says that there’s “limited allocation for our market.” That means if you want one, get in touch with Porsche before it is too late.
