Setting up a supporting infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) is quite possibly the most important and daunting task for a country as big and heavily populated as India. We’ve seen automakers and state governments in the past joining forces with companies to make highways and densely populated cities EV ready. Now, Noida has joined that bandwagon. The Noida Authority has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to install 100 EV charging points.

BSES’ First EV Charging Station Goes Live In Delhi

As per the agreement, the Noida Authority will provide EESL with spaces in parking lots where the latter can install the EV chargers. EESL will set up, operate and maintain the charging points and the entire system will be based on a revenue-sharing model. EESL, which created a world record for the largest single order for EVs in 2017, has the expertise in setting up such stations. The state-run energy company has already installed 55 such charging stations in the national capital and it also running similar projects in cities such as Gurugram, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mumbai and Chandigarh.

Two out of the 100 charging stations planned are expected to be up and running in a week. Each one will incur a cost of around Rs 2 lakh. As far as the electricity tariff is concerned, it should between Rs 9-10. Charging an EV from zero to 100 per cent will take around 90 minutes. Needless to say, that time will vary based on the size of the battery as well as the specifications of the feed and the EV’s electrical setup.

Two EV-Supporting Highway Corridors Expected By March 2020

Passengers cars such as the Tata Tigor EV and the Mahindra eVerito have a maximum travel range between 130-150km. However, Hyundai’s Kona Electric has an ARAI-certified range of 452km. The said model was introduced in India on July 9, 2019, with a price tag of Rs 25.3 lakh. In 10 days, the South Korean carmaker received 120 bookings for its first-ever EV in India.
