Skoda is one of those players who likes to build excitement around an upcoming model slowly. The recent past showed us many such story-building episodes. There was the European Kamiq, the Scala and, of course, the Kodiaq RS. Now, the Czechs have taken up yet another such chapter. And it might just be the most important one for them in 2020. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, which will run from March 3-15, the carmaker will take the covers off the all-new Octavia RS.

Details for the fourth-gen model are scarce at the moment. Skoda hasn’t even begun running its favourite marketing gimmick – sketches followed by teasers. But there is one confirmed bit of information – the propulsion system will be a plug-in hybrid. If you haven’t already guessed it, yes this will be the first time an RS-marked Skoda will feature a dual-motor setup.

Under the “easy guesses” category, you could include sporty styling inside and out. Also, some gizmos which will help tame the power. But, the question that everyone wants to get an answer for – which plug-in hybrid? Taking a stroll down “Speculation Street” would help in identifying one. Why not the two-engine configuration from the Passat GTE? Skoda borrowed it to create the first-ever hybrid Superb last year.

The powertrain in question consists of a 1.4-litre, turbo-petrol engine which, all on its own, pumps out 154bhp, and an electric motor that’s good for 113bhp standalone. The total power output is an impressive 215bhp. On electric power alone, the duo can travel up to 55km. Granted, that’s not as good as the conventionally-powered Octavia RS245 from the previous generation. But carmakers these days are under tremendous pressure to keep the emissions count as low as possible across their range. Just maybe, the dots joined above will paint the real picture. What’s your take on it?
