After expanding Gloster’s range by launching a new variant a few days ago, MG Motor India has now done something similar for Hector. It has introduced a new trim level called Shine. It sits between the second-to-base Super and second-to-top Smart trims. Derived from it are three variants – Petrol-MT, Petrol-CVT and Diesel-MT. Unfortunately, the petrol mild-hybrid powerplant isn’t available in Shine spec. Prices? Here they are:

  • Hector Shine Petrol-MT: Rs 14.52 lakh
  • Hector Shine Petrol-CVT: Rs 15.72 lakh
  • Hector Shine Diesel-MT: Rs 16.50 lakh

The first variant costs about Rs 36,000 more than the Super Petrol-MT, while the second costs Rs 1.27 lakh less than the Smart Petrol-CVT. And the third one is Rs 50,000 dearer than the Super Diesel-MT and Rs 1.3 lakh cheaper than the Smart Diesel-MT.

With that math over, let’s concentrate on what the Shine offers over Super. It comes with an electric sunroof, chrome outside door handles and an electric parking brake. The new derivative also packs telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel, keyless entry using a smart key and push-button start/stop. Apart from the sunroof, which is a single pane unit and not panoramic in form, all other features mentioned above are reserved for the Shine Petrol-CVT variant.

If that has put you off, here’s something that might interest you. Morris Garages India has devised a dedicated accessories package for all Shine variants. Opt for that, and the list of features expands with stuff like a wireless mobile charger, an air purifier, leather-wrapped steering wheel and window sunshades. The company has also introduced a new paint shade – Havana Grey – for Hector. It is available in all variants except in Style variants.

Mechanically, there are no changes to report. There’s a 1.5-litre petrol engine on offer with 141bhp/250Nm on tap and a 2.0-litre diesel that puts out 168bhp/350Nm. In Shine form, the Hector is available with a 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT.

The timing for introducing the new trim level is spot on. Earlier this week, Tata Motors launched a new automatic variant for the Harrier. Besides competing with that, the Hector also rivals the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks.
