Maruti Suzuki has equipped the Ertiga with the 1.5-litre diesel mill that debuted with the Ciaz. The larger motor is available in three trim levels – VDi, ZDi and ZDi+. They are priced at Rs 9.86 lakh, Rs 10.69 lakh and Rs 11.20 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively. Compared to the same trim levels housing the smaller 1.3-litre diesel heart, the newly introduced variants are approximately Rs 29,000 dearer. Just like in the Ciaz, the new engine in the MPV can only be had with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The BSIV-compliant, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine puts out 95PS of power and 225Nm of torque. That’s 5PS/25Nm more than the smaller, Fiat-sourced diesel mill. While the extra oomph should help the three-row people carrier accelerate quicker and reach a slightly higher top speed, there is no mild-hybrid system to support the engine. Maruti Suzuki claims that the new powertrain can return up to 24.20kmpl. That’s 1.27kmpl less than the Ertiga’s 1.3-litre engine and 2.62kmpl less than what the same setup manages in the Ciaz. The primary reason for the latter is the extra weight the MPV carries.

As per the carmaker, the new Ertiga has been very well received. Since its launch in November last year, the Ertiga has bagged over 40,000 sales for its maker. Courtesy to that, the MPV holds a staggering 39 per cent market share in its segment. What’s more, 37.27 per cent of the total sales numbers comprises of range-topping variants.

The standard safety kit on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, ISOFIX anchorages for child booster seats, high-speed alert system, seatbelt reminder for front seats and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters. Rear parking sensors are available in all variants except LDi. In India, Ertiga’s main rivals are the Renault Lodgy and the Mahindra Marazzo.
