Saar: Available in four variants, the people-carrier is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 123PS/300Nm on tap.

After an extensive teaser campaign, homegrown automaker Mahindra has launched the much-hyped, “shark-inspired” MPV in India. Dubbed as the Marazzo, it is priced from Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). It will be available with a 7- and an 8-seat layout in four different variants – M2, M4, M6 and M8. Before we get to the features and specifications of the Marazzo, let’s acquaint ourselves with the introductory pricelist:

Mahindra Marazzo Pricelist (Ex-showroom India)

VariantPrice
M2Rs 9.99 Lakh
M4Rs 10.95 Lakh
M6Rs 12.40 Lakh
M8Rs 13.90 Lakh

The abovementioned prices are for the variants with 7 seats in their configuration. Mahindra mentioned that corresponding prices for the 8-seater versions will differentiate by around Rs 5,000. The company also claimed that the Marazzo is the first-ever product which is built on a ladder-on-frame chassis and features a front-wheel-drive setup.

Under the hood is a newly developed, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine that puts out 123PS of power and 300Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission only. The ARAI certified mileage is 17.6kmpl but in real-world conditions, that figure should hover between 10-15kmpl. Mahindra claims that the engine is currently BS-IV complaint but will be upgraded at a later stage to meet the stricter BS-VI emission norms. Alongside that update, Mahindra will also introduce the options for a petrol engine and an automatic transmission. To our surprise, there won’t be a four-wheel-drive version ever. That’s in contradiction to what the first-ever teaser image of the instrument cluster showcased.

As far as creature comforts are concerned, the Mahindra Marazzo comes with leatherette upholstery, 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto (no Apple CarPlay here!), cruise control, voice control, projector headlamps, fog lamps with LED DRLs and 17-inch alloy wheels. On the safety front, all variants come with dual airbags, passenger side airbag cut-off switch, ABS with EBD, disc brakes on all wheels, ISOFIX anchorages for child booster seats, speed- and impact-sensing auto door locking and unlocking, and an overspeed warning. The list of safety gizmos also included rear parking sensors, rear parking camera with guidelines, rear fog lamps and emergency calling.

As per the think-tanks at the company, the Mahindra Marazzo isn’t targeted to take on any car currently on sale in India. And based on the pricing, it sure looks that way. But prices of the M2 and M4 variants of the Marazzo overlap the prices (ex-showroom Delhi) of the range-topping diesel-powered variants of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. On the other hand, the fully-loaded Marazzo undercuts the Toyota Innova Crysta by a considerable margin. What remains to be seen, however, for how long will Mahindra offer the Marazzo at introductory prices.
