Kia Motors is gearing up to launch an onslaught on the Indian automobile industry. By mid-2019, the South Korean carmaker will introduce its first production for India. The said product was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo as the SP Concept. After a customer-engaging christening campaign for the compact SUV, Kia Motors India is likely to tag the production version as the Kia Tusker.

All that is no secret. But news has now surfaced that the carmaker has lined up six product launches in three years. Do the math, and you’ll end up with one product every six months. This product offensive strategy will commence with the Tusker, and by the end of 2021, Kia Motors India should have a portfolio with six models.

The Kia Tusker will be a direct competitor to SUVs like the Renault Captur and the Hyundai Creta. Later on, Kia is likely to expand its list of offerings with direct rivals to the like of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Honda City. We can see a trend here. None of the models is from any of the mass market segments. And that’s exactly what Kia Motors is trying to achieve. What exactly? Establish itself as a premium brand. Hence, don’t expect a smaller model than the Baleno-rival from Kia Motors. At least, no until the year 2022.

Kia Motors is not coming to our shores to hang around. It wants to be among the top players in the country. Sure, India is a very different and difficult market to survive in, and Kia knows this. But the carmaker also has a vast amount of experience at its disposal. It is present in a vast number of markets around the globe and is equipped enough, in all forms and factors, to land a punch in the Indian market. At least, that’s how we look at it. What do you think?
