It wasn’t long ago when Hyundai unveiled the all-new Elite i20 to the world. Hopefully, by the end of the year, it will forge a way into India as well. Does that mean Hyundai will take away the Elite i20 until that chapter unfolds? To be brutally honest, not all of it. To keep the badge alive and fit enough for the BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) reign, the carmaker has injected it with an upgraded petrol engine and take away all the diesel-fed and CVT-equipped variants. Here’s how the latest variant-wise pricelist looks like:

As the table depicts, prices for all the retained derivatives have soared by Rs 15,000. And there’s no Era trim anymore. The revised price list comes courtesy of the upgraded, 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces 82bhp/114Nm. Compare those figures with the BSIV-compliant engine, and you’d find a deficit of 1Nm. The only transmission option available now is the 5-speed manual.

As for the standard list of features, it includes dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors, front fog lamps with accompanying DRLs, a double-din, Bluetooth-enabled music system mated to a six-speaker sound system, all four power windows, rear AC vents and electrically-adjustable ORVMs. The range-topper ropes-in features like auto-folding ORVMs, auto headlamps, six airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, rear wiper with washer, keyless go, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a rear-view camera (the last three are also available in Sportz+ Dual Tone).

Hyundai has also shortened the options for colours. If you want a single-tone finish, the Elite i20 is available in white, silver, stardust and red. The vibrant blue and orange shades are no longer on offer. For those who want a dual-tone finish, Hyundai has just one option – white with black roof. Choose that, and the interior theme will be black with red accents, instead of a beige-and-black finish.

In India, the Hyundai Elite i20 competes with the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and the Volkswagen Polo. As things stand, the Altroz is the only diesel-fed, BS6-ready premium hatchback currently available. Out of the lot, which one would be your choice?

  1. Although it doesn’t fall in the same category, I would happily buy the Ford Freestyle Diesel. No other car under 10 lacs drives quite like that.
