Ever since Hyundai Motor India launched the Grand i10 Nios, there have been questions about Grand i10’s fate. Why? The primary reason was the amount of cannibalisation between the two siblings. After must speculation, it seems the South Korean carmaker has pulled-off a trick that minimises overlapping and allows both models to stay in production.

So, what is the trick? First of all, all diesel-fed variants of the Grand i10 are no more. Secondly, the petrol-automatic derivative has gone too. Lastly, the remaining petrol-powered options start at Magna trim and end at Sportz. In other words, the Grand i10 is no longer available in the entry-level Era and the range-topping Asta iterations. Put together, more than half of the model’s derivatives are not on sale anymore.

Impact? Let’s rope in the price range of both siblings. After the revisions, the Grand i10 now starts at Rs 5.79 lakh and goes up to Rs 6.5 lakh. The Grand i10 Nios, on the other hand, has a price list that ranges between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7.99 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi). Those numbers reveal that all of Grand i10’s variants overlap part of the Grand i10 Nios’ price bracket. Out of the two, it is only the Nios that has a BS6-compliant petrol engine. Hyundai is likely to upgrade the standard Grand i10 to meet the stricter emission norms by March 2020 as well.

Let’s also make it clear that Hyundai isn’t following Maruti Suzuki’s route of axing all diesel-fed models for BS6 era. Upcoming cars such as next-gen Creta, Verna and the i20 are expected to carry diesel derivatives in their respective portfolios. Even the Tucson facelift, which is likely to launch sometime next year, will have both types of engines on offer. Apart from the Grand i10 Nios, the only other Hyundai model that is presently BS6-ready is the Elantra.
