Let’s face it, Porsche wanted to stick to its naming norms, and yet the Taycan’s “Turbo” tags were misleading. And it wasn’t just ordinary folks like us who thought of that. Even the extraordinary came online and blabbered about it on social media. Porsche, however, was predictably unfazed. And, now it has introduced a new Taycan derivative called the 4S. There’s no “Turbo” nameplate here. That should help put pro-Tesla-ians on mute.

In Taycan’s tree, the 4S sits beneath the Turbo. The ‘4’ means it still has two electric motors, one on each axle. In short, they form the basis of an electric all-wheel-drive system. Figures for power, range and charging capabilities depend on the battery size chosen. With the Taycan 4S, the standard capacity is 79.2 kWh. Porsche calls it the Performance battery. The other option is Performance battery Plus. This one ropes in the same 93.4 kWh pack that does duty in the Turbo siblings.

With the smaller battery in place, the Taycan 4S will offer up to 523hp/640Nm. Those numbers stretch up to 563hp/650Nm with the larger lithium-ion pack. Porsche claims that it doesn’t matter which option you choose, the Taycan 4S will reach 100kmph from nothing in 4 seconds and top out at 250kmph. Compare those figures to the Turbo-marked variants, and the sprint time is at least 0.8 seconds longer, and the top speed falls short by 10kmph.

As you’d expect, the real differences between the two battery options are in range and charging capacity. According to the WLTP cycle, the Taycan 4S will travel up to 407km with the smaller battery and 463km with the larger one. Before this, the maximum claimed range of 450km was for the Taycan Turbo. Porsche says that the 4S’ peak charging capacity is 225 kW with the Performance battery and 270 kW with the Performance battery Plus.

Yes, there are some distinguishing factors in the design department as well. The Taycan 4S comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers, slightly redone front apron, as well as side sills and diffuser, finished in black. The standard kit includes a 10.9-inch infotainment system, a curved digital instrument cluster, partial leather interior, eight-way electrically adjustable comfort seats and Porsche Active Suspension Management.

Porsche confirms the Taycan 4S will arrive in European dealerships in January of next year. Since that isn’t too far away, the company has started taking orders already.
