If you were to ask a bunch of car nutters what’s so special about the Ford Mustang, the most common answer you’ll get is… “Duh! It’s a Mustang!” And when you ask the same about the GT500, they’ll probably walk away in disappointment and never talk to you again! The Ford Mustang is an undeniable icon of the automotive world and whenever a new form of it arrives, the whole industry buzzes with excitement.

At the 2019 North American International Auto Show, which is also known as the Detroit Auto Show, Ford has unveiled the most powerful iteration of the Ford Mustang ever. Obviously, it flaunts cobra badges inside and out and proudly wears the GT500 marque. Ford hasn’t quite opened up completely about what makes the latest GT500 the most special one till date but it has shared enough for us to keep drooling.

Behind the steroid-injected exterior lives a 5.2-litre V8 which gets its extra oomph from a supercharger. To keep the centre of gravity as low as possible, Ford engineers installed the inverted 2.65-litre supercharger along with an air-to-liquid intercooler within the V8’s valley. The setup is enough to pump out over 700PS of power which, when fed to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, can take the muscle car to 100kmph from nothing in mid-three-seconds.

Bolting a massive engine with a huge power output isn’t the only thing serious sports cars are all about and surely isn’t the case with the latest Mustang GT500. It takes advantage of revised suspension, new electronic power steering and light-weight coil springs at the front and rear. All that is complemented by track-bred Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and larger and stiffer Brembo brakes. Ford will also offer two handling packages for the Shelby GT500 but the one that takes agility and driving dynamics to a different level is the Carbon Fibre Track Package. It brings 20-inch carbon fibre wheels with fatter Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, adjustable wing and splitter wickers. To reduce the weight further, the rear seats are tossed out.

The interior of the muscle car is garnished with carbon fibre instrument panel applique, door panel inserts in Dark Slate Miko suede with contrasting stitching and Recaro racing seats. The list of features includes a 12-inch colour digital instrument cluster and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system which is mated to an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SYNC 3, SiriusXM and FordPass Connect.

We’ll have to wait until the fall of 2019 to know what are the exact specifications and the pricing of the quickest Mustang ever. Obviously, Ford will introduce the Mustang GT500 in America first, followed by a bunch of important markets around the globe. Will it come to India? Unlikely. Do we want it in India? Definitely!
