Skoda, like Volkswagen, is going through a significant transformation of approach. Together, they call it the India 2.0 project. At this year’s Auto Expo, the Czech carmaker unveiled three SUVs to the public – the Kodiaq petrol, Karoq and the Vision IN Concept. Today, it has commenced accepting bookings for the Karoq, with a minimum token amount of Rs 50,000. Those interested can get in touch with the nearest authorised dealer and deposit the amount. As for the deliveries, they will start on May 6, 2020.

The Skoda Karoq is a step-sibling to the Volkswagen T-Roc, which will see its India launch later this week. To gauge customer acceptance, Skoda will take advantage of the government’s rule of importing up to 2,500 cars without the need for homologation and introduce the Karoq via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. That means it will cost considerably more than what its size might lead you to believe. In other words, the Karoq has similar dimensions as the recently launched Hyundai Creta. But in terms of pricing, it would become a rival to the Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier and the MG Hector.

The Karoq will come in one trim level and one engine-transmission combination. The latter comprises of a 1.5-litre TSI engine and a 7-speed DSG. Skoda claims that the slick transmission and the 148bhp/250Nm of oomph come together to propel the Karoq to 100kmph from nothing in about 9 seconds. The top speed is 203kmph. Before you get too excited, the 4×4 system will not be on offer in India. At least not at the moment.

The SUV will have to work hard to lure customers away from the competition. That means it needs to have a good list of features. For India, the Karoq will pack stuff like a digital instrument cluster, an 8.0—inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a rear-view camera and LED-powered headlamps, tail lamps and DRLs.

Skoda will unveil the pricing of the Karoq sometime next month. The carmaker says it will price the compact SUV competitively-enough for customers to take notice.
