Saar: Official bookings are expected to commence in September 2018.

This year’s festive period is expected to bring a lot of joy to car bores like us. And, of course, in-turn to people who are looking for new options in the passenger vehicle segment. There are a number of cars that are expected to launch in India over the three-month period of September to November 2018 and one of them, according to a report, is the all-new Honda CR-V SUV. It is likely to launch in the month of October this year.

The fifth generation Honda CR-V will bring a couple of firsts (for itself) in India. One, it will be sold in a seven-seater configuration and two, it will have a diesel engine option. Both these aspects will surely help the Japanese carmaker capture the imagination of a lot more people in the market who are after a high-riding seven-seater diesel-powered SUV. But, Honda will also offer a petrol-fed engine with the CR-V. What are the specifications of these two engines? Let’s find out.

The first is a 1.6-litre diesel engine that puts out 120PS/300Nm. That’s disappointingly low for an SUV which will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Skoda Kodiaq. It is worth noting that the same engine, in international markets, is also available in a higher state of tune with 160PS/350Nm. But bringing that engine to India would have added a considerable amount in the cost of the Honda CR-V in India. Anyway, the lower-spec diesel mill will come mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

For those who want the Honda CR-V with a petrol engine will get a 2.0-litre i-VTEC mill under the hood with 154PS/189Nm on tap. This engine will come mated to a CVT (continuously variable transmission), which will route the power towards the front axle only. The diesel engine, on the other hand, will get the option of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

On the price front, don’t expect the Honda CR-V to have an advantage over its peers. Prices are expected to start at around Rs 27 lakh and go north of Rs 30 lakh for the diesel-fed AWD variant. That means, this monocoque SUV from Honda will also compete with ladder-on-frame mammoths such as the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
