Saar: It marks the entry of the 2 Series in India, with a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbo-petrol engine under the hood and 410PS/550Nm on tap.

It is official. BMW India is bringing yet another model with a full-fledged M Division trickery on offer. It is called the BMW M2 Competition. With this model, BMW will finally mark the entry of the 2 Series model range in India. However, what we are getting is the most powerful derivative of the 2 Series ever. The M2 Competition is essentially a replacement of the standard M2, which was never sold in India. But with the rise in demand for performance cars, BMW has decided to bring the M2 Competition in India.

Under the bonnet lives a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that puts out 410PS of power and 550Nm of torque. As standard, it comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission but can also be had with an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both units route the power to the rear wheels and while the 6-speed manual can help the car sprint from nought to 100kmph in 4.4 seconds, the automatic can do the same 0.2 seconds quicker. BMW claims that the top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph.

In essence, the powertrain is almost exactly the same as the one that does duty in the bigger BMW M3. The only difference is the power output from the engine, with the M3 having 40PS more at its disposal. Unlike the M3, which is available both as a sedan and a coupe, the M2 Competition will only be offered in the latter form.

As far as equipment is concerned, the standard kit will include features like valve-operated M sports exhaust system, dual-double round tailpipes, ‘M2 Competition’ branding on the boot lid, front grille and side air vents and M-tuned differential and suspension setup. Optional equipment includes features such as bucket M sports seats, 19-inch lightweight M alloy wheels and M Sport brake pack.

By now you must have figured out that the BMW M2 Competition is the M3 in a smaller package. Since BMW isn’t anticipating rocketing sales numbers from the new-bee, it will also be brought into India via the direct import route. We are expecting a price hovering in the range of Rs 80 – 90 lakhs (ex-showroom). It will become the first M car from BMW that will cost less than Rs 1 crore. Once it launches, it will take on the likes of the Porsche 718 Cayman.

BMW India is also expected to bring the M5 Competition, which broke cover in the month of May this year. It will take on the likes of the Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+, which was launched in May 2018, at a price of Rs 1.5 crore (ex-showroom).
